I've reported it to the Crimson tech lead.

If xerces.jar is in your classpath and crimson.jar isn't, then xerces
should be the selected parser.  Crimson is the JAXP-default, so it's
chosen if you have jaxp.jar and crimson.jar in your classpath.  This
should be explained in lib/README.
