I have a different philosophy. I don't think it's condescending, but more
a acceptance of reality. Let's face it, if developers are so good why do
we still have problems with buffer overflows almost 15 years after Robert
Morris made the national news. Personally I don't trust developers,
especially not myself :-)

Saying "I don't want the checks because I know what I'm doing", to me is
like saying "I don't write tests because I always write correct code".
Anyone who has look at my code can tell immediately that last statement
is false.
